International Workshop on
URBAN RESILIENCE
How to apply resilience thinking to urban environments
Barcelona, 18-19th November 2011

Why: Resilient Cities has become a buzzword since „resilience‟ seems to be the catch-all term finding its application into social, physical, economical and social-ecological science. Urban systems are now more than ever the hot spots responsible for threatened planetary ecological boundaries. Climate change impacts and the global environmental change are challenging factors to be adapted to city development and management. During the last International Resilience Conference (Arizona University, March 2011) a group of young researchers from different countries started to build up a network of people involved in Urban Resilience projects and researches. This first workshop on Urban Resilience is the first international workshop leaded by this group who aim to reframe resilience perspectives applied to urban systems.
What: The will of this International Workshop on Urban Resilience is to critically analyze the resilience perspectives related to cities functioning, developing and managing practices. From social, ecological, planning, risk management and climate change adaptation point of views, and throughout worldwide case studies, it will be discussed and explored what the meaning of resilience thinking is in the urban context and what its value could be. This would help framing some shared views for the Urban Resilience theory building, and suggest its value for a better understanding of Urban Systems dynamics and management. This theoretical framework finds its potential in its application to economic, societal, planning and city-region management practices.
Who: The workshop is organized by Lorenzo Chelleri (Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, INTERFASE group) and Marta Olazabal (University of Cambridge, UK and TECNALIA, Spain) and hosted by the Master Programme in Landscape Intervention and Management at the Barcelona History Museum (MUHBA). Invited speakers debating on different Urban resilience perspectives are: Jeff Ranara (Stockholm Resilience Centre, Sweden); Lily Yumagulova (British Columbia University, Vancouver, Canada); James Waters (Tyndall Centre, UK); Anna Kunath (Helmholtz-Centre, Germany); Guido Minucci (Politecnico di Milano, Italy); Camilo Calderon (Uppsala University, Sweden).
